Giorgi Kakhiani: Nika Melia's MP's authority will be suspended if court decides to arrest him
After consent from the parliament, the Prosecutor’s Office can apply to the Court with the motion to impose imprisonment to Nika Melia, MP of the National Movement Party, – Chairman of the Committee on Procedural Issues Giorgi Kakhiani stated during the news program of Georgian First Channel “Moambe”.
“Parliament allowed the prosecutor’s office to apply to Court with mediation to impose imprisonment to Nika Melia, since a member of parliament enjoys certain immunity, which extends to the arrest”, – Giorgi Kakhiani stated/
According to him, Nika Melia is still a member of parliament and his authority has not been terminated.
„So far only the prosecutor’s office is entitled to apply to the Court with the motion to impose imprisonment to Nika Melia. Nika Melia’s MP’s authority will be suspended if the court decides to arrest him” – Giorgi Kakhiani said.
The Georgian parliament held the voting and gave consent according to which the General Prosecutor’s Office can apply to the Court with the motion to impose imprisonment to Nika Melia. The 91 MPs voted for, and 0 – against. On June 25, the General Prosecutor’s Office charged Nika Melia, a member of the National Movement, in connection with the June 20 developments in front of the parliament building at Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi.
