Georgia’s FM: Nauru’s decision on so-called republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia is triumph of Georgian diplomatic efforts

“Nauru’s decision to sever diplomatic relations with the so-called independent republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia represents a highly significant victory for Georgia’s non-recognition policy and for the diplomatic efforts deployed by our foreign service to safeguard the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty on the international stage,” declared Minister of Foreign Affairs Maka Botchorishvili.

According to the Minister, Nauru’s original stance was a gross violation of international law and norms.

“We have worked tirelessly alongside various partners to ensure that this decision was reversed. Of particular note is the work carried out in recent times, the fruit of which is today’s decision. First and foremost, I wish to congratulate every diplomat who spares no effort in defending Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity on the global stage, and, of course, wish our nation every success in all steps taken to uphold Georgian sovereignty and territorial integrity.

This is a complex process; it is by no means simple. As the anniversary of the 2008 war approaches, it is worth remembering that the very outcome of that war was the recognition of independence for the regions of Abkhazia and Ossetia, and, regrettably, the international fallout that ensued following Russia’s recognition. We will continue our work to ensure that decisions taken unlawfully are rolled back, while taking every step necessary to restore the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Maka Botchorishvili stated.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, on July 21, 2026, the executive body of the Republic of Nauru, the Cabinet of Nauru, adopted a decision to annul diplomatic relations between the “Republic of Nauru and the Republic of South Ossetia, also known as the State of Alania” and between the “Republic of Nauru and the Republic of Abkhazia.”
