Georgian Public Broadcaster launches new initiative for visually impaired audience from new season

The Georgian Public Broadcaster’s (GPB) First Channel, in partnership with the non-governmental organisation of persons with disabilities, Media PosiTv, is proud to launch a new project dedicated to visually impaired viewers: Georgian Cinema Audio Description.

In its initial phase, the GPB First Channel will broadcast fifteen Georgian films with audio description, making them accessible to Georgian radio listeners.

Audio description entails a precise, objective, and consistent verbal narration of visual elements, which guides listeners through the imagery on screen. This narration is carefully integrated during natural pauses in the programme, between dialogues, ensuring that the material remains engaging and accessible for people with visual impairments. Additionally, films featuring audio description will be available on the GPB First Channel’s streaming platform, 1tvplay.

The Georgian Cinema Audio Description project aims to enrich classic Georgian feature films and cultural masterpieces with audio descriptions, allowing both the visually impaired audience and the wider public to fully experience and appreciate Georgian cinematic and cultural heritage.

This initiative is realised through a partnership between the GPB First Channel and Media PosiTv,” a non-governmental organisation of persons with disabilities that has been dedicated to developing audio description technology and content for the past two years.
