Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili arrived in Rome. The President’s welcoming ceremony was held at Ciampino Military Airport.
Accompanied by his wife, Kavelashvili will attend the inauguration of the newly-elected Pope of Rome, Leo XIV on May 18.
The Georgian delegation includes Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili, Head of the Zugdidi and Tsaishi Dioceses, Chair of the External Relations Department of the Georgian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Gerasime, as well as Protopresbyter Giorgi Zviadadze, Rector of the Tbilisi Theological Academy and Seminary and deputy head of the Sioni Cathedral.
Pope Leo XIV, formerly American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, was elected by the conclave on May 8.
Pope Francis passed away on April 21 at the age of 88. He was laid to rest in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome under his will.
President Kavelashvili also attended Pope Francis’ funeral at the Vatican.
