Georgian PM meets UN Secretary-General

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili met Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) António Guterres.

The meeting held within the scope of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) was focused on the discussion of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and significant steps made by the UN towards this end. The PM noted that the country supports the Treaties proposed by the Secretary-General, which are aimed at the best fit of the UN with current and possible challenges.

According to Irakli Garibashvili, Georgia appreciates the efforts made by António Guterres towards developing a New Peace Agenda, which is based on the fundamental principles of international law and the UN Charter.

Topics of discussion also included the global security environment and challenges, devastating humanitarian and security conditions witnessed currently in occupied territories of Georgia, as well as UN engagement in the peaceful resolution of the conflict.

As Irakli Garibashvili noted, international security architecture has been altered as a result of a war waged in Ukraine, with another significant challenge being the impact and current risks of climate change; common efforts are needed to address the existing difficulties. When talking about the current situation in the occupied territories of Georgia, the Prime Minister noted that reports and resolutions of the UN on dealing with the dire humanitarian condition of occupied territories of Georgia and their maintenance in the international agenda are significant mechanisms.

Irakli Garibashvili reaffirmed at the meeting that the commitment assumed by Georgia towards a peaceful conflict resolution is pursued further. He shared information with the Secretary-General on the efforts made by the Government of Georgia and expressed his gratitude to the UN for support and engagement in peaceful conflict resolution. The Prime Minister of Georgia also thanked the UN Secretary-General for the unwavering support of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia.

Security stance and challenges faced by the South Caucasus were among the topics of discussion as well. Irakli Garibashvili noted that Georgia stands ready to contribute to ensuring peace and stability in the region.
