Georgian PM dismisses prison system concerns as fully under control
“Claims surrounding conditions in Georgia’s correctional facilities lack factual basis and have failed to stir public alarm,” Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told reporters in Kakheti on Wednesday, maintaining that the prison network operates strictly in line with established institutional standards.
Speaking to journalists during a visit to the eastern region, Kobakhidze emphasised that the Ministry of Justice and relevant law enforcement agencies maintain complete oversight across the penitentiary sector.
“There may have been minor localised difficulties, but the overall situation remains completely under control, and there is no cause for unrest whatsoever. The Ministry of Justice and all relevant authorities have full command of the situation,” Kobakhidze stated.
The Prime Minister dismissed recent media coverage as groundless political commentary, noting that public familiarity with prison governance prevented widespread agitation.
“Because these claims had no underlying substance, the situation naturally settled down very quickly. Everyone knows very well what takes place within Georgia’s penitentiary system, how the institution is structured, and the operational standards under which it functions. Consequently, similar artificial speculation will never gain traction. The situation is under total control,” Kobakhidze added.
