The Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Georgian Parliament, MP Nikoloz Samkharadze, has hailed the inaugural parliamentary-level meeting between Georgia and Nauru as a milestone following the formal establishment of diplomatic relations.

Speaking after discussions with the Nauru Parliament Speaker, Samkharadze emphasised the diplomatic significance of Nauru’s decision to withdraw its previous recognition of the self-proclaimed independence of occupied Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region (South Ossetia).

According to the committee chairman, the Georgian side formally thanked Nauruan representatives for retracting their recognition and reiterating commitment to Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“Today, we met with the Speaker of the Parliament of Nauru in what can be described as a historic exchange, as it represents the first parliamentary-level meeting since the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two nations. We thanked the Nauruan authorities for revoking their recognition of the so-called independence of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region and for recognising Georgia’s territorial integrity. This is undoubtedly an important milestone in advancing our non-recognition policy,” Samkharadze said.

MP Samkharadze expressed optimism that the Pacific island nation’s reversal would encourage remaining states with similar stances to align with international law.

“We hope that other states will follow Nauru’s example in the near future. Although the number of countries that recognised these breakaways can be counted on the fingers of one hand, quantity is not the decisive factor here. What matters fundamentally is that every nation in the world unconditionally respects and recognises Georgia’s territorial integrity. We are striving tirelessly to achieve this, and it remains a permanent pillar of our diplomatic work,” Samkharadze added.
