Georgian Parliament Speaker thanks Speaker of Nauru’s Parliament for revoking recognition of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region
Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, has met Marcus Stephen, Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Nauru. The speakers have met for the first time since Georgia and Nauru established diplomatic relations.
Papuashvili thanked Stephen for Nauru’s decision to revoke its recognition of Georgia’s occupied regions, Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali Region, as “independent states” and to sever diplomatic relations with them.
According to the Parliament Speaker, the decision clearly demonstrates respect for international law.
Both sides welcomed the establishment of diplomatic relations between Georgia and Nauru, noting that the step marks the beginning of fruitful bilateral co-operation.
At the meeting, the two sides also expressed their readiness to develop parliamentary ties.
Shalva Papuashvili said Georgia stands ready to share its successful reforming experience with Nauru.
The meeting took place in Arusha, Tanzania, on the sidelines of the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Accompanying the Speaker at the event are Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chair of the Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee, and Mariam Lashkhi, Chair of the Committee on Education, Science and Youth Affairs.
