Ilia Darchiashvili, the Georgian Minister of Foreign Affairs, is currently on his working visit to Brussels to participate in events commemorating the 20th anniversary of the European Union’s enlargement.

In his statement, Darchiashvili highlighted the importance of the EU’s enlargement, noting that it marked a pivotal moment in the history of the European Union and provided a strong impetus for continued progress.

“Twenty years ago, the European Union underwent one of its most significant enlargements, which was a major catalyst for the Union. Today, I am in Brussels on a working trip. Under the Belgian presidency, we have a jubilee event where member states host nine candidate countries.

We will engage in crucial discussions, especially as the European Union begins considering its future enlargement process. It is essential and meaningful that the candidate countries take part in this process,” said Darchiashvili.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs also mentioned that he would meet with the Vice President of the European Commission and other European colleagues during his visit.

“As part of the trip, I will meet with the Vice President of the European Commission, who oversees values and transparency, to discuss the challenges Georgia faces in this area. We will engage in an open and in-depth dialogue on these matters. I will also have the opportunity to conduct bilateral meetings with my European colleagues to discuss strengthening our relations and garnering their support for Georgia’s further European integration,” Darchiashvili added.
