FM Botchorishvili: Georgia, Slovakia acknowledge importance of sovereignty, often face criticism because of our sovereign decisions
The governments of Slovakia and Georgia are well aware of the importance of protecting their countries’ sovereignty and the value of cooperation in this regard. We often face criticism because of our sovereign decisions, said Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili during a joint press conference with her Slovak counterpart.
Botchorishvili emphasized that protecting sovereignty is essential for ensuring peace, stability, and prosperity in Georgia.
“This is my first visit to Slovakia as Foreign Minister, but certainly not our first meeting. Political dialogue between our countries is intense, and today we had a productive discussion on cooperation and partnership. Slovakia has always been an important partner for Georgia, and this continues to be the case. Both governments understand how important it is to protect our sovereignty, and we often face criticism because of our sovereign decisions. Cooperation in this area is vital,” Botchorishvili said.
The minister also highlighted Georgia’s cautious security policy, noting that the country is not protected by NATO’s security umbrella.
“It is especially important to pursue a careful security policy to maintain peace. Our government’s efforts are aimed at ensuring peace for our citizens and the region, and this goal unites us with Slovakia,” she said.
Botchorishvili expressed gratitude for Slovakia’s support of Georgia’s territorial integrity and non-recognition policy. She outlined ongoing plans for high-level visits, including the Slovak President, Speaker of the Parliament, and an expected visit by the Slovak Prime Minister.
“We discussed trade and economic cooperation, which has strong potential. The agreement signed last year provides a good basis to further deepen relations, including sending a Slovak economic attaché to Georgia. We are ready to host Slovak delegations to strengthen business and economic ties,” Botchorishvili said.
Tourism and cultural cooperation were also emphasized as key areas for deepening bilateral ties. The minister praised Slovakia’s support for Georgia’s European integration aspirations.
“Direct flights between our countries help attract tourists and strengthen connections between our peoples. Slovakia’s support for Georgia’s EU integration, without politicizing the process, is very important,” th Minister noted.
Regarding sanctions, she confirmed Georgia’s cooperation with European partners to prevent circumvention through the country and thanked Slovakia for its support in maintaining transparent and productive relations.
“We will continue working to strengthen ties between our countries in all directions. Today’s meeting served this purpose,” she concluded.
