The 16th meeting of the coordination mechanism involving Georgian and Abkhaz participants took place in Istanbul on May 29, chaired by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) as a mediator.
According to the Office of the Georgian State Minister for Reconciliation and Civil Equality, the coordination mechanism has successfully located and exhumed the remains of 526 individuals to date. Of these, 285 have been identified and returned to their families for proper burial.
This progress has been made possible through the dedicated and collaborative efforts of all participants involved in this humanitarian endeavour.
“Participants shared newly processed information, which is expected to enhance the ongoing tracing and identification efforts. Despite the advancements, 1,860 individuals remain unaccounted for, with their families awaiting closure after years of uncertainty. The meeting concluded with a commitment to intensify efforts in gathering and exchanging information, aiming to expedite the search and identification process,” the Office of the State Minister states.
