Georgia introduces the Finnish-Estonian model of military service

Georgia will introduce the Finnish-Estonian model of compulsory military service in 2025. Deputy Georgian Defense Minister Grigol Giorgadze elaborated on the model in detail in the Tavisupali Khedva (Free Vision) program of the GPB’s First Channel.

Youth will enroll in a 6-, 8-, or 11-month course of their choice. A computerized algorithm will randomly choose the number of freshly summoned military servicemen based on demand. From 2024, the Defense Ministry will manage the registration instead of local governing bodies.

According to Giorgadze, modern facilities meeting international standards will be constructed, and an information campaign will be carried out as part of the reform.

The deputy minister explained that the reform is based on “total defence and resilience” and aims to train more people.

“When we have real training, we will also have various benefits for motivation. We expect applications will increase. First, determining where the young people desire to serve will be optional and, perhaps, we will not need the compulsory requirement one day. We need to get to the point where everyone is willing to serve in the national military,” Giorgadze remarked.
