GD's Irakli Cheishvili assesses June 11 Brussels meeting as politically motivated

“The government pursues national policy, and if anyone thinks that a technical meeting was held in Brussels, is mistaken; it was politically motivated,” said Irakli Cheishvili, MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party.

According to Cheishvili, Brussels raises political demands by insisting on the government’s repeal of the Transparency Law, the Law on Family Values and Minors and imposition of sanctions on Russia.

“We said explicitly that we are not going to take any step backwards. Therefore, I believe that yesterday’s meeting was entirely politically motivated. Although the technical group presented evidence, Brussels made a political decision.

I cannot predict what they will put on the agenda; I hope they won’t make a decision to suspend visa-free travel. We were restricted from travelling with diplomatic passports. I think they won’t dare to make such a decision,” he said.
