GD representative dismisses Joe Wilson's influence on Donald Trump

“We have closely watched the pre-election campaign of Donald Trump, who is now the president-elect of the United States. As a result, we are well aware of whose viewpoints and counsel he tends to consider. Unfortunately, Joe Wilson, the Congress representative and Chair of the Helsinki Commission, is unlikely to be among those with a direct line to the president-elect,” stated Levan Machavariani, a member of the Georgian Dream (GD) party.

Machavariani claimed that Joe Wilson is driven by “subjective and mercantile interests,” which likely disqualifies him from being a trusted advisor to Trump.

Regarding the prospects of Georgia-US relations, Machavariani expressed optimism that they would improve following Trump’s inauguration.

“During his term, Trump will face numerous challenges and problems inherited from the outgoing administration. With conflict and instability persisting globally, we hope that upon taking office, President-elect Trump will establish a conducive environment for resolving the complex issues in Georgia-US relations.

We take at face value Trump’s pledge to bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine in the early months of his presidency. The resolution of this conflict will serve as a cornerstone in re-evaluating relations not only with the United States but also with the European Union. The sooner this goal is achieved, the sooner we can expect a reset in the relations between Georgia, the US, and the EU,” he said.
