Mikheil Sarjveladze, a member of the parliamentary majority said that the decision of Strasbourg Court rejected the allegations of violation of ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili’s rights as a prisoner. He said the campaign waged by Saakashvili’s lobbyists “proved to be a lie.”
According to Sarjveladze, the government will keep on its stance in Saakashvili’s case: The convict will serve his prison term and the prisoner’s right to health will be protected.
“There is only one approach: first, the sentence must be executed and second, all rights granted to the prisoner must be protected. This, of course, implies the right to health, which requires special attention.
If physicians suggest that there is no essentiality for him to stay in a clinic, the prisoner will be transferred to the penitentiary facility because the prisoner’s stay at a medical institution is not a privilege but a necessity,” Sarjveladze said.
On May 12, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rejected the plea of the jailed ex-president’s lawyers urging for Mikheil Saakashvili’s transfer to Warsaw for medical treatment.
