GD Chair: No alternative to granting EU candidate status to Georgia, based on EC recommendation, will of 80% population
“In light of the European Commission’s issued recommendation and the overwhelming choice of over 80% of the Georgian population, there is no alternative to our country’s EU candidate status,” Irakli Kobakhidze, the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party chair, affirmed.
Speaking about Hungary’s stance on opening negotiations on EU accession with Ukraine and Moldova, the GD Chair said Georgia would not interfere with “EU-Hungary affairs.”
According to Irakli Kobakhidze, Hungary has its interests. It should not obstruct Georgia from getting EU candidate status.
“You remember Ukraine got candidate status last year, and nobody tried to link it with Georgian issues, neither from within the country nor from abroad. This year, the Georgian issue is Georgian, the Ukrainian issue is Ukrainian, and the Moldovan issue is solely Moldovan,” he said.
The GD Chair said he was sure Georgia would receive candidate status, and all the rest was “speculations.”
