GD Chair: Georgian society is conservative, with centuries-long culture, values

“The 90% of our people believe that it is significant to protect our children, grandchildren and young generation from malevolent, anti-national, anti-human propaganda,” said Chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party, Irakli Garibashvili remarking on the initiative against LGBT propagation.

According to Irakli Garibashvili, Georgian society is conservative, with centuries-long culture and values that need proper understanding and acknowledgement.

“A campaign is waged in the world, in the kindergartens, schools bringing transgenders and telling children in the US, Europe that if they do not like their gender, they can change it.

The situation is alarming and that is why we had a discussion with our team and the parliamentary majority brought forth this initiative. I believe that the society will understand it correctly.

When we adopted an anti-discrimination law, I voiced that initiative linked with defining marriage in the constitution that was inked in 2017 as the relation between a man and a woman.

These are issues, which require a serious approach. Georgian society is conservative, with centuries-long culture and values. Our society, children and our values need protection,” he said.
