GD Chair believes MEPs, former Ombudsman, opposition should apologize
“The Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) confirmed that the Georgian government acts in line with the law, and protects everyone’s human rights regardless of a grave crime committed by a prisoner,” Irakli Kobakhidze, Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party told the GPB’s First Channel.
According to Kobakhidze, the ECHR “poured cold water” onto a 1.5-year campaign waged by ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili’s supporters, members of the European Parliament, former Ombudsman and the opposition who, through different resolutions, demanded the ex-president’s release and his transferring abroad for medical treatment.
“The Strasbourg court responded to speculations and absurd accusations very clearly,” he said.
GD Chair believes that MEPs, the former Ombudsman and the opposition should apologize.
“They should apologize. However, we do not expect them to do so because it was their political choice then and they continue to act in accordance with their political interests,” Kobakhidze said.
On May 12, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rejected the plea of the jailed ex-president’s lawyers urging for Mikheil Saakashvili’s transfer to Warsaw for medical treatment.
