French National Assembly initiates draft resolution on developments in Georgia

The French National Assembly initiated a draft resolution on developments in Georgia. The document says that the resolution aims to “condemn the illiberal and authoritarian direction of the Georgian government and reaffirm support for Georgia’s European future.”

As the resolution states, the Georgian government “has begun to make alarming changes, moving away from European democratic values and straining relations with civil society.”

The draft resolution says that “the deteriorating state of the rule of law is evident in concrete examples: former President Mikheil Saakashvili continues to remain in difficult and unsuitable conditions, which is condemned by international organizations.” It mentions that opposition politicians are imprisoned and participants of the 2024 civic protests remain detained.

The draft resolution calls on the French government to support the imposition of targeted individual sanctions, in coordination with European partners, against Bidzina Ivanishvili and his close allies and tailor its supportive mechanisms to the needs of Georgian civic society.
