Foreign national arrested at Batumi Airport as police intercept ‘exceptionally large’ drug smuggling attempt

Officers from the Adjara Main Division of the Central Criminal Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), in coordination with the Customs Department of the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance, have arrested a foreign national on charges of the illegal purchase, possession, and smuggling into Georgia of an exceptionally large quantity of narcotics.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, during a search of the suspect’s person and hand luggage at Batumi International Airport, law enforcement officers seized an exceptionally large quantity of illicit drugs as material evidence, including MDMA and cocaine.

The investigation is being conducted under Articles 260 and 262 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which carry a penalty of up to 20 years or life imprisonment.
