Foreign Ministry concerned about Russia deploying additional military base in occupied Abkhazia
Georgian Foreign Ministry called on the Russian Federation to fulfil the commitments as per the August 12, 2008 ceasefire agreement and stop the unlawful occupation of Georgia’s inseparable regions.
“We are concerned about the announcements on the deployment of an additional Russian military base in the occupied territories and the inclusion of the Abkhazian region in the integration processes initiated by Russia,” the Ministry said in its statement.
According to the Ministry, similar moves represent a gross violation of Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and another provocative attempt to legitimize the illegal occupation of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions.
Aslan Bzhania, the Russian-backed de facto president of occupied Abkhazia, said on Thursday that an agreement had been signed for a permanent naval base in the Ochamchira region.
