Foreign Minister: We need broader cooperation, yet Eurocrats push for self-isolation and demand others cut key global ties

“Demands that candidate states break ties with major global political movements are laughable,” declared Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili in response to EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos’s remarks.

The Foreign Minister noted that European bureaucrats often demonstrate a penchant for self-isolation and seek to impose that same restrictive posture onto others.

“Until now, discussions centred on the Copenhagen criteria. It appears a new criterion is now being invented for candidate nations. Imposing such criteria is frankly laughable.

Calls of this nature are utterly unacceptable. Today, greater cooperation and stronger ties are needed with all actors who play a pivotal role in global politics. The MAGA movement represents a major political force, and its leader governs one of the most powerful nations. Consequently, demanding that states sever ties with it is absurd,” Botchorishvili stated.

The Minister’s comments follow a declaration by EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, who asserted that candidate nations seeking EU accession must cut ties with Donald Trump’s MAGA movement to secure membership.
