For Georgia's Sharashidze: Relations with Ukraine damaged by GD's policy, restoration welcomed

“The responsibility for the deterioration of relations between Georgia and Ukraine lies with Georgian Dream,” said Giorgi Sharashidze, a member of the Gakharia For Georgia party.

He stated that the government has used “offensive rhetoric” toward Ukraine instead of expressing consistent support for a country at war.

Sharashidze added that normalization of relations between Georgia and Ukraine would be welcome.

“It is understandable that there were certain international resolutions that Georgia joined, and we acknowledge and welcome that. It would be positive if relations between Georgia and Ukraine were normalized,” he said.

He also referred to the former “Associated Trio” format involving Georgia, Ukraine, and Moldova, noting that Georgia is no longer part of this framework.

“While Ukraine and Moldova continue progressing in their EU integration process and have entered negotiation stages, Georgia’s position has changed due to decisions made by the government,” he added.

On May 26, the Foreign Minister of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, expressed appreciation for the Swiss OSCE Chairmanship and Georgia’s chairmanship of the Forum for Security Co-operation for convening a special meeting in Vienna, thanking both countries for their leadership and support of international principles.

“I am personally grateful to my Swiss and Georgian counterparts, Ignacio Cassis and Maka Botchorishvili, for their leadership, and to all countries who clearly stood up today in defence of the UN Charter and Helsinki Principles,” Ukrainian FM posted on social media.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also congratulated Georgia on its Independence Day, expressing hope for mutually beneficial relations and reaffirming Ukraine’s readiness for closer cooperation.

“I congratulate Georgia and the Georgian people on their Independence Day. Our two nations share long-standing ties and a common understanding of the value of freedom and dignity. I wish Georgia peace, unity, strength, and prosperity. We count on a mutually beneficial relationship and Ukraine stands ready to move toward this,” Zelenskyy wrote on the X Platform.
