For Georgia’s Sharashidze: Real solution for politicians to stay connected with people and take responsibility

“The solution is not bail; it is for politicians to do everything possible to remain with the people, to assume responsibility for all that happens in the political sphere,” stated MP Giorgi Sharashidze, a member of the Gakharia for Georgia party.

He pointed out that doubts are emerging about the consistency of some politicians.

“There are questions, and they are legitimate. You recall how much attention was paid to the issue of bail non-payment. This act was portrayed as a heroic political gesture, but it was far from heroic. Those currently in prison for not paying bail would have been free by October 4, and it would have been very revealing to see their stance—what they would have done to prevent the irresponsible provocation on October 4, which only served to strengthen Georgian Dream and weaken the opposition. Wasn’t this an act of evading responsibility by chance? These questions are valid.

Back when the mass campaign to boycott the municipal elections began, do you remember our public question to them: what plan did they have if a boycott occurred? They had no answer. So, in that context, not paying bail—viewed as a heroic act on one hand, and an evasion of responsibility on the other—appeared to be the right course of action.

But I wonder, what would those people have done if they weren’t in prison and instead were with the people? Would they have taken responsibility? Or would they have done something to prevent what happened?” said Giorgi Sharashidze.
