For Georgia's Sharashidze: German Ambassador does not violate Vienna Convention by attending rally

“The actions taken by the government against the German ambassador are not an attack on him personally, but rather on Germany, the country he represents in Georgia,” Giorgi Sharashidze, a member of the Gakharia for Georgia party, stated in parliament.

He explained that when the ambassador visits a rally or demonstration and talks to activists, it has nothing to do with breaching the Vienna Convention.

“The ambassador’s primary responsibility is to obtain information directly from the source, including on matters of public concern. He should meet with representatives from both the government and the opposition. Naturally, he must remain neutral. The European Union’s policy is rooted in safeguarding human rights. The German ambassador is well aware that our government is not a democratic regime, that state institutions do not act as checks and balances, and that the judiciary is not independent.

Therefore, our partners perceive a threat in the laws. But these two laws are not the main obstacle. The real issue is the autocratic nature of the regime. If the German ambassador attributes these two laws as the primary problem, then, sir, let him do so. I am not in a position to judge that. Overall, the country is governed by an undemocratic, autocratic regime, partly because of these laws and others,” Sharashidze affirmed.
