Giorgi Sharashidze, a member of the Gakharia for Georgia party, says the draft laws initiated by the Georgian Dream are aimed at suppressing dissent and will not receive support from his team.
According to Sharashidze, the ruling party fears losing power under democratic conditions and is attempting to go far beyond the principle of transparency.
“This is another act of madness. We have never been against transparency, but this goes far beyond transparency. These draft laws are directly aimed at suppressing any form of dissent,” Sharashidze said.
He stated that the real goal of the amendments is to weaken the civil sector and restrict the development of political parties.
“Directly or indirectly, these amendments will affect virtually every citizen of Georgia who holds a dissenting opinion toward the Georgian Dream policies. Naturally, these initiatives will not have any support from our team,” he added.
Sharashidze also accused the ruling party of lacking moral authority to impose such restrictions, citing allegations of corruption among former and current officials.
“If anyone is to be banned, it should be the ‘Dream’ itself — a regime that has embezzled money from its own people and produced numerous corrupt prime ministers, ministers, and officials,” he noted.
Georgian Dream has announced amendments to the Law “On Grants,” introducing criminal liability and clarifying the definition of grants. External lobbying would also become a criminal offense. Additional legislative changes are planned to the Law “On Political Unions of Citizens” and regulations concerning the public political activity of entrepreneurial entities.
