For Georgia's Khvedeliani: Dividing May 26 into supporters and opponents of GD is unacceptable; political activities should not be tied to dates
“For our team, nationality, sovereignty, and the independence of our country are issues that transcend party lines, and it is unacceptable for any political faction to exploit this for their own benefit,” said MP Tata Khvedeliani, a member of the Gakharia for Georgia party.
She emphasised that dividing May 26, Georgia’s Independence Day, into supporters and opponents of the Georgian Dream is categorically unacceptable.
“It is very important to continue engaging with our Western partners and the international community. However, the political future of Georgia should be decided by our people within our own borders. There are many peaceful means to determine the destiny of our country. As for May 26, this is a day of national significance. For our team, nationality, sovereignty, and the independence of our country are issues that transcend party lines, and it is unacceptable for any political faction to exploit this for their own benefit. Consequently, dividing May 26 into supporters and opponents of the Georgian Dream is unacceptable to us. This is our day, and it belongs to our people. Political organisations mustn’t tie their activities to specific dates. It is encouraging to see some engaging with the public, including in the regions. They are following their own plans, but I cannot comment further as I am not privy to the details,” Khvedeliani stated.
For context, the Opposition Alliance has issued a statement declaring that they are “launching a national mobilisation campaign, with the symbolic culmination being a large rally planned in Tbilisi on May 26, Georgia’s Independence Day.”
