Ex-president Zourabichvili: We collectively decided to reclaim May 26 Independence Day
“Yesterday, I had a significant meeting where we all decided together to reclaim May 26. We will save our independence and rescue our country,” former President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvili declared.
According to her, May 26 symbolizes independence, which is currently under threat in Georgia.
“At today’s meeting of our Resistance Platform, we discussed the horrific situation in the country – attacks on young women, a prisoner who died in custody with 30 injuries documented in Vivamedi’s official report. We cannot have any hope in either investigations or the courts. This is what must urgently change in this country – we need to reclaim state institutions that will conduct proper investigations and restore an independent judiciary.
Meanwhile, we witnessed the adoption of the MEGOBARI Act in America, which is a substantial step. On May 9, on Europe Day, we all must stand together in response to the Russification of this country. We must come out and counter this Russification with our European aspirations and defend visa liberalization, which, if threatened, we will fight to restore.
Most importantly, yesterday, I had a significant meeting where we all decided together to reclaim May 26. Reclaiming May 26 means that everyone together – political parties, civil society, NGOs, representatives from various segments of society, whether business or culture – all Georgian citizens will reclaim May 26 because this day belongs to us.
May 26 symbolizes independence, and Georgia’s independence today needs to be rescued. We will save our independence. We will save our country. For this purpose, we will all stand together first on May 9, and then the entire country, all of Georgia, united on May 26,” Zourabichvili stated.
