Ex-Energy Minister says achievement of EU PMI status by BSSC is historic victory for Georgia
Former Georgian Minister of Energy, Davit Mirtskhulava, commented on the European Commission’s decision to grant the Black Sea Submarine Cable (BSSC) project the status of a Project of Mutual Interest (PMI).
According to Mirtskhulava, awarding this status to a Georgian project and initiative is a significant triumph for the country.
“It’s a momentous victory for our nation, and I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all energy professionals involved. Today, the Black Sea Submarine Cable (BSSC) project has been recognised as a Project of Mutual Interest (PMI) by the European Union!” Mirtskhulava wrote on social media.
The Black Sea Submarine Cable (BSSC) project, designed to connect Georgia’s and Europe’s electricity systems, has been awarded the PMI status by the European Commission. This designation means the project will be eligible for EU funding and will benefit from streamlined permitting and regulatory procedures, thereby facilitating its timely realisation.
The project involves laying a 1,155-kilometre cable linking Georgia to Romania. This connection will enable South-Eastern Europe and Romania to expand their export capacities and trade electricity based on hourly market prices, fostering greater regional integration and energy security.
