European Integration Committee Chair: Georgia ready for dialogue based on mutual respect; hopefully, EU representatives will soon sit at negotiation table
“Today, the Brussels bureaucracy is swimming against the current, to the detriment of the interests of the majority of EU member states,” said Levan Makhashvili, European Integration Committee Chair at the plenary.
According to Makhashvili, there is no time for isolation but high time for a dialogue in which Georgia will engage as a responsible partner.
“Georgia has always been and will be ready for a dialogue based on mutual respect; hopefully, EU representatives will soon sit at a negotiation table,” he said.
Makhashvili believes that Brussels must determine whether it genuinely supports Georgia’s European integration or expects political submission from the country. He stated that the European Union’s attitude toward Georgia was flawed, unfair, and damaging from the very beginning.
He urged MEPs to reject a confrontational attitude and respect Georgia’s sovereignty and the Georgian people’s will.
“The European Parliament must abandon the language of confrontation and unjustified, disproportionate, and unprovoked interference in Georgia’s internal affairs. The European Parliament must respect Georgia’s sovereignty and the will of the people as expressed in the parliamentary elections. Only then will we be able to sit down with them at the negotiating table based on mutual respect,” he stated.
