European Council President assures locals in occupied regions of Europe's support
The situation along the occupation line is very complex, very difficult for the local population. That is why it is so important for me to say to the local population – you are not alone, Europe is committed to peace, security, and stability. European Council President Charles Michel explained to journalists after seeing the occupation line in the village of Khurvaleti.
Charles Michel said the EU is committed to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia.
“It was very important for me to see with my own eyes the situation on the ground. That is why I’m here. You know, the European Union is committed to the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Georgia, and also there is an important role played by the European Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in order to try to keep as much as possible stability and add to some confidence-building measures. We know the situation is very complex, very difficult for the local population. That is why it is so important for me to say to the local population – you are not alone! Europe is committed to peace, security, and stability,” European Council President said.
Michel also added that it is important to strengthen the ties between Georgia and Europe.
“I had an opportunity this morning to meet with the President and the Prime Minister. I will have other political meetings with the other political actors later today. It is very very important for us to strengthen the ties between Georgia and Europe. At the same time, it is very important also to implement reforms that are needed not for Europe, but for the population in Georgia – the rule of law, the fight against corruption, and it is also important to develop ambitious economic programs.
Covid-19 is a big challenge in Georgia, in Europe, and everywhere in the world. We will work in order to be able to develop a recovery strategy that’s important for the people. We will try also to play a role when it comes to the vaccination in order to demonstrate our complete solidarity,” Charles Michel declared.
He also added that his visit to Georgia is an opportunity to express the European support for stability and security.
