EU Special Representative will hold meeting in Moscow in connection with detention of EUMM Monitors
“The detention of Monitors of the EU Monitoring Mission is a serious incident. The EU Monitoring Mission facilitates to maintain peace, and the fact that the mission has to cope with such challenges is a serious problem,” said Deputy Secretary-General of the European External Action Service, Jean-Christophe Belliard.
As Jean-Christophe Belliard noted, the EU will consider this issue.
“The responsible persons will hold a meeting to find out how and why this incident took place. The stabilizing the situation in this region of Georgia is very important for us, and we will continue to work actively in this direction. Our Special Representative will leave for Moscow to meet with Russian colleagues. We appreciate the Geneva format and efforts to resolve the problem peacefully since the EU is based on exactly these principles. Therefore, we hope that the issue will be resolved peacefully and diplomatic response will be achieved, ” – said Jean-Christophe Belliard.
On the afternoon of 24 October, Monitors of the EU Monitoring Mission-Georgia were detained by so-called South Ossetian security personnel while conducting a patrol in the Chorchana-Tsnelisi area.
