EU Commissioner: We recommend granting candidate status to Georgia on understanding that certain steps are taken

“We recommend to grant candidate status to Georgia on the understanding that certain steps are taken,” said Olivér Várhelyi, European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, during the session of the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs.

“In Georgia, we have seen positive new dynamics of engagement with the EU in the recent months and specifically on the 12 priorities. Therefore the Commission recommends the Council grants Georgia the status of candidate country on the understanding that further steps are taken on fighting disinformation, on alignment with CFSB, improving implementation of parliamentary oversight, addressing the issue of political polarization, de-oligarchization and anti-corruption,” he stated.

The European Commission recommended the European Council to grant Georgia the status of a European Union candidate country.
