EU Ambassador: MEPs free to express their views

Members of the European Parliament have freedom of expression of their views, said EU Ambassador to Georgia, Paweł Herczyński, remaking on the EP resolution of the European Parliament, which speaks about about the release of jailed -ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili.

“They are responsible to their voters. The European Parliament is one of the institutions of the European Union, and we respect their freedom of expression and freedom of expression of their views. As for the position of the European Union, our leaders, including the commissioners, have already expressed their opinion.

We are monitoring the health condition of former President Saakashvili very carefully and we call on the Georgian authorities to protect all his rights as a prisoner and a defendant in court, and of course we are at the full disposal of Georgia and the authorities if they want the European Union to be involved in any way. So, what happened in the European Parliament is the initiative of the European Parliament. If you ask me for my personal opinion, I will keep my personal opinion to myself,” said Paweł Herczyński.

The European Parliament on February 28 adopted two resolutions in support of Georgia. MEP Anna Fotyga said that at her request, an amendment had been made to the resolution calling on Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili to pardon Mikheil Saakashvili.
