Eka Beselia - no one has right to interfere in Council of Justice's activities, but it does not mean that Council has no accountability
Eka Beselia, Chairperson of the Georgian Parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee said that the Council of Justice should be independent, no one has right to interfere in its decision, but it does not mean that the Council itself does not have accountability to the public.
Eka Beselia responded to the statement of Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili regarding appointment of judges for lifetime and noted that the head of the government made a very noteworthy and important statement.
“We respect democratic values and independence of institutions. Therefore the Council of Justice, which is organ of the judiciary, must unequivocally be independent of its decisions. We do not have right to interfere in its decisions.
But it does not mean that we observe the process ongoing in the Supreme Council of Justice indifferently”, – Beselia said.
MP believes that any decision related to appointment of judges for lifetime, should be taken with high responsibility.
