Education Minister: 99% of state university rectors affirm higher education reform as vital
At a briefing held at the government administration, Givi Mikanadze, Georgia’s Minister of Education, stated that 99% of rectors from state universities have expressed their support for the national higher education reform, emphasising its importance and necessity.
He noted that, similar to university rectors, representatives from the business sector have also shown full readiness to participate in the reform’s implementation.
Mikanadze added that since the reform concept was publicly presented, the document has been accessible to all interested parties.
“Following the publication of the document, we held meetings with various target groups. At the initiative of Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, we convened a meeting with the rectors of all state universities, during which we discussed the concept and related issues in detail for over three hours. All their questions were addressed with clear, well-reasoned responses,” Mikanadze explained.
The Education Minister also highlighted the need for legislative amendments to facilitate the reform’s realisation, stating that a package of amendments will be submitted to the Georgian Parliament this week.
“Before the start of the next academic year, in relation to the national exams, it is essential to implement the first stage of certain legislative changes based on the concept. Accordingly, we have prepared the necessary amendments. This week, a package of legislative proposals will be submitted to Parliament for accelerated review and approval, with the amendments scheduled for consideration during the next sessional week,” Mikanadze concluded.
