Eastern Command stages culminating “Sharp Eye” field exercise
Units of the Georgian Defence Forces’ Eastern Command have held the culminating exercise of the “Sharp Eye” training. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Irakli Chikovani, Commander of the Defence Forces Lieutenant General Giorgi Matiashvili and other senior Defence Forces officials attended the field exercise at the Vaziani training area. Manoeuvre, armour, aviation, artillery, engineer and air defence groups took part in the exercise.
During the exercise, service personnel carried out a range of tasks: ambushes, reconnaissance, clearing buildings, bridging a ditch, decontaminating units, repelling drone attacks and evacuating casualties. An engineer section used a robot to neutralise a downed drone and explosive material, while a reconnaissance company used FPV drones to halt a simulated enemy column.
The artillery battalion’s mortar and howitzer crews, the LAR-160 multiple rocket launcher system, a mechanised and a tank company, Mi-24 attack helicopters, a UH-1H Iroquois, and sniper teams supported the infantry brigades in the culminating exercise.
The exercise aimed to improve the conduct of defensive operations at the operational and tactical levels, the use of modern command and control systems, command using unmanned aerial vehicles, and coordinated action.
