Donald Tusk: I am concerned by the sentencing of Gigi Ugulava and targeting of Georgian opposition politicians
The head of the European People’s Party, Donald Tusk, has made a comment on the case of Gigi Ugulava, former Tbilisi Mayor and one of the leaders of oppositional European Georgia Party on his twitter page.
Donald Tusk notes that he is “concerned by the sentencing of Ugulava and targeting of Georgian opposition politicians”.
“I am concerned by the sentencing of Gigi Ugulava and targeting of Georgian opposition politicians. The justice system cannot be used to fight political opponents. The ruling elite must guarantee fair competition. The rule of law is essential under the EU-Georgia Association Agreement” – Donald Tusk tweeted.
As a reminder, on February 10, the Supreme Court of Georgia sentenced opposition leader Gigi Ugulava to three years and two months in prison in connection with Tbilisi Municipal Development fund.
The ruling Georgian Dream Party proposes European Parliament to send a fact-finding mission to Georgia to study the case of Gigi Ugulava, former Tbilisi Mayor and one of the leaders of oppositional European Georgia Party.
