“Georgia is not a member of the UN Security Council. Therefore, at our request, partner countries convened the meeting. This work will continue in other international organizations and will be further intensified,” Deputy Foreign Minister Lasha Darsalia said.

According to Darsalia, the closed-door UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Georgia’s occupied territories was followed by significant and firm statements supporting Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“A UN Security Council meeting was held on Georgia’s occupied territories. The meeting took place behind closed doors, after which member states issued a public statement. It was a significant and firm statement that once again reaffirmed support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Darsalia said.

He emphasized that the statement explicitly referred to the situation as an occupation, which he said was particularly important for Georgia.

“You know that during this period we always appeal to various international organizations to hold meetings and issue statements regarding the occupation of Georgian territories. We are not members of the UN Security Council, so our partner countries held this meeting at our request. This work will continue in other international organizations and will be further strengthened,” Darsalia said.

The UN Security Council held the closed-door meeting in connection with the 18th anniversary of the Russia-Georgia war, discussing the situation in Georgia’s Russian-occupied territories and the Russia-Georgia conflict. Current and incoming members of the Security Council called on Russia to immediately withdraw its troops from Georgian territory and reverse its recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region.
