Deputy Education Minister: Merging GTU and TSU will create leading institution for top global rankings

“By the unification of the Technical University and Tbilisi State University, we will get a very strong flagship university that will have a chance to be included in the best rankings,” said Zviad Gabisonia, Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth Affairs.

According to Gabisonia, work in that direction has already been launched.

“It is not about merging, but unification. The Georgian Technical University is strong in the technical-technological direction, while Tbilisi State University leads with humanitarian-social departments. It also has a universal-type, precise and natural science departments. We believe that by the unification of the Technical University and Tbilisi State University, we will get a very strong flagship university that will have a chance to be included in the best rankings. Work in that direction has already been launched.

We had a meeting with the management of the Georgian Technical University, and a meeting with the administration of the Tbilisi State University will be held today. We are in the process of agreeing on viewpoints, and consultations continue. A meeting with the Minister is scheduled for Friday, and high government officials will likely meet with relevant individuals,” he said.

Georgian Minister of Education, Science and Youth Affairs Givi Mikanadze announced at the briefing that the Tbilisi State University and Georgian Technical University will unite. The name of the merged higher education institutions will remain Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University.
