Culture Minister inspects infrastructure of Zestaphoni Ushangi Chkheidze Drama Theatre

Georgian Culture Minister Maia Bitadze inspected the infrastructure and technical condition of the Zetaphoni Ushangi Chkheidze Professional State Drama Theatre.

Theatre Director Vakhtang Jugheli briefed the minister on the reconstruction and operation.

The theatre building is dilapidated and requires large-scale rehabilitation. Preparatory work for the building’s rehabilitation has already begun. The Municipal Development Fund will implement the project.

The history of the Zetaphoni Ushangi Chkheidze Professional State Drama Theater dates back to 1875, when locals performed their first plays on stage. In 1897, a fire destroyed the building. The new building opened in 1904. The Theater was named after Ushangi Chkheidze in 1964. It participates in various local and international theater festivals.
