Department of State Spokesperson: U.S. closely monitors Mikheil Saakashvili's case

The U.S. closely monitors Mikheil Saakashvili’s case, said Matthew Miller, US Department of State Spokesperson in response to the question about Georgia’s jailed ex-president.

The US Department Spokesperson was asked if the U.S. supports the call of a group of former U.S. ambassadors, five ambassadors to Georgia,  who issued a statement last week urging the Georgian Government to allow President Saakashvili to obtain life-saving medical treatment.

According to Matthew Miller, it is the Georgian government’s responsibility to provide the medical care Saakashvili needs.

“I will just say we are monitoring Mr. Saakashvili’s case closely. We are very concerned about his health. As we’ve said publicly and privately to the Georgian Government many times, it is the government’s responsibility to provide the medical care he needs to ensure his human rights are respected. And we will continue to monitor this case very closely,” he said.
