Czechia sanctions five Georgian citizens

Czech Republic sanctioned five Georgian citizens. The government decided at today’s sitting that sanctions were imposed against Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Aleksandre Darakhvelidze, Prosecutor Lasha Kotrikadze and three judges, Koba Chagunava, Nino Galustashvili and Mikheil Jinjolia.

According to the Czech Foreign Ministry, the sanctioned individuals are responsible for “violent interference” during the 2024 and current protests.

The sanctioned individuals were banned from entering the country and making financial transactions with Czech organisations, while their assets will be frozen.

The Czech media writes that the Georgian government continues to detain pro-European opposition members amid continued protest rallies, which erupted following the October 2024 disputed parliamentary elections and the government’s decision to suspend EU accession negotiations.

According to Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský, Great Britain, the United States, Ukraine, Lithuania, and Estonia have taken similar measures, although the EU has yet to reach a consensus on imposing sanctions on Georgian government officials.
