Czech Foreign Ministry concerned of Zurab Japaridze's detention

“We are concerned about the detention of Zurab Japaridze,” the Czech Foreign Ministry said in its statement released on its website.

The Czech Foreign Ministry calls on the Georgian government to uphold democratic values.

“We are concerned about the detention of Zurab Japaridze and the closed nature of this court case. We call on the Georgian authorities to uphold democratic values, the rule of law, and respect fundamental rights and freedoms,” the statement reads.

On May 22, Zurab Japaridze, one of the leaders of the Coalition for Change, had his bail conditions replaced with imprisonment as a preventive measure.

This decision was made by Judge Irakli Shvangiradze of Tbilisi City Court. Japaridze was detained directly in the courtroom during the hearing.
