CoE Secretary General: All political forces must respect democratic principles, CoE available to facilitate dialogue
“Polarization is undermining democratic processes in Georgia. All political forces, both the majority and opposition alike, must assume the responsibility to break this deadlock, open dialogue and respect democratic principles,” said Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE) at the press conference summing up his visit to Georgia.
According to Alain Berset, the CoE is available to facilitate political dialogue.
“Democracy cannot function in a climate of generalized mistrust and permanent confrontation. The Council of Europe is available to facilitate this political dialogue, public confidence-building measures, and parliamentary cooperation. Ultimately, however, it is for the Georgian people and political leaders to ensure these conditions for a fully functional democracy, with healthy debate of political majority, minority and civil society,” he said.
