City Court rules imprisonment for individuals charged with group violence, attempt to seize strategic facility
The Tbilisi City Court has sentenced several individuals, Davit Sturua, Abo Naveriani, Eva Shashiashvili, and Tornike Mchedlishvili, to imprisonment in connection with charges of group violence and/or attempting to seize strategic facilities.
The prosecution insisted on imprisonment, while the defence requested bail in the amount of GEL 6 thousand for each.
The lawyers also demanded the replacement of the Judge. They stated that Judge Lela Maridashvili, on October 7, reviewed the cases of other individuals charged with organizing group violence, an attempt to seize strategic facilities, violent change of constitutional order, and calls for the government’s overthrow. The plea was not satisfied.
One of the individuals involved, Tornike Mchedlishvili, stated that he only attempted to help people.
“My interest and idea was not to cause any disorder or violence; each of my actions was intended to help people, both activists and law enforcement officers,” he stated.
According to Prosecutor Tamar Bezhuashvili, it was Tornike Mchedlishvili who struck law enforcement officers with an object.
“This material has been attached to the case, and the court will review it. He was relentlessly striking this object. I am unable to specify exactly what the object is. Tornike Mchedlishvili is the individual involved, and the footage confirms that he damaged the fence of the Presidential Administration building,” she stated.
None of the indictees pleaded guilty to the presented charge.
On 6 October, police detained 13 individuals connected to the events of October 4. Their trials are currently proceeding at the Tbilisi City Court. The accused face sentences ranging from six to nine years’ imprisonment.
