Citizens party leader alleges assault by law enforcement officers during protest
Aleko Elisashvili, leader of the Citizens party, alleged law enforcement officers assaulted him during yesterday’s rally in front of the Government Administration building.
Elisashvili intends to file a complaint regarding the incident.
“Despite sustaining injuries such as a broken rib and swollen face, I remain steadfast and resolute. While I generally respect law enforcement officers, some were excessively aggressive towards me. Vazha Siradze exhibited particularly aggressive behaviour towards me. Within moments, I found myself on the ground, surrounded by officers who kicked and kneed me. I was then promptly taken to the Didube police station.
Levan Ioseliani, Georgia’s Public Defender, arrived, and a protocol was drawn up confirming my immunity status, thereby clarifying that it was not an arrest. Subsequent medical examinations at the Bochorishvili clinic confirmed a broken rib. Despite this, I encountered solidarity among some officers who quietly expressed support. Filing a complaint regarding the incident is necessary, and I intend to do so. My focus remains on resisting the oppressive Russian law and continuing the struggle. The battle lies ahead,” expressed Aleko Elisashvili.
