CEC announces closure of registration period for initiative groups in 2025 municipal elections

The Central Election Commission (CEC) has announced that the deadline for registering initiative groups to participate in the upcoming local self-government elections has now expired.

According to the Election Commission, a total of 50 initiative groups have submitted applications to the election authorities to nominate candidates for the municipal representative body, the Sakrebulo, and for the mayor of the self-governing city or community in the elections scheduled for October 4, 2025.

“Across Georgia, eight initiative groups have applied to the relevant election commissions to nominate an independent mayoral candidate. Of these, six groups have been registered, while two have been refused registration.

Regarding candidates for the single-mandate (majoritarian) seats, 42 initiative groups have applied to the district election commissions to nominate a candidate; of these, 39 groups have been registered, and three have been refused registration. Independent candidates nominated by initiative groups are required to submit lists of supporters for registration no later than 40 days before the elections, which is August 25,” the CEC statement reads.
