The European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation (ACES Europe), a non-profit federation based in Brussels, assigned Batumi the status of 2019 City of European Sport.
The awarding ceremony was held at the European Parliament and Batumi Mayor Lasha Komakhidze, being on an official visit to Brussels, attended the event.
Assignation of the status to Batumi was decided in summer. A special commission of the organization visited Batumi and toured about the city’s sports facilities.
In the report prepared by ACES Europe, Batumi was named as a good example for the promotion of sport, education and healthy lifestyle. Sports policy and infrastructure, programs and activities were described as excellent.
Batumi is the first city of Georgia which was granted the status. Batumi hosted the 43rd World Chess Olympiad this year.
