Bakhmaro hosts traditional horse race

The Bakhmaro Cup 2025, a traditional horse race known as Doghi in Georgian, is taking place in Bakhmaro. Dozens of riders from Samegrelo, Adjara, Guria and various other regions across the country are engaged in the event.

Throughout the day in Bakhmaro, children’s entertainment activities will be staged alongside an exhibition and sale of local entrepreneurs’ products. A ceremonial liturgy has already been performed at the Church of the Transfiguration in Bakhmaro, a focal point during the annual Transfiguration Day celebrations on August 19.

The horse race is being attended by the country’s President Mikheil Kavelashvili, along with representatives from the executive and legislative branches of government. The prize-giving ceremony for the race winners will take place today.

According to the organisers, staging this traditional horse race and folk festival aims to promote tourism and develop the Bakhmaro resort. The day will conclude with a concert and fireworks display.

The tradition of horse racing in Bakhmaro was established in the 1930s. Since then, the sporting competition has been held annually on August 19.
